Hey-oh. Welcome to the Gift Economy Tribe. I figure you are already part of the gift economy. You already enjoy free boxes, skill shares, potlucks, street musicians, and bad jokes.
But what projects are you working on that are gift economy-based? What ideas can we steal from you... ahem, do you choose to gift to us that we can spread in our own local communities?
Also introduce yourself, show us what you're made of, what your interest is, what your dreams are...
I'll start. I'm Rico and isn't until after we created this tribe that I realized almost all the projects I'm working on were part of the gift economy: Guerilla Drive-In, Free Skool, Free Carpentry, and a half dozen others.
Eventually I want to look back and wonder, a little amused perhaps, when was the last time I needed to pay for anything. To comodify something, to put a fiscal value on my work, rather than give it to others, to the world, and to myself as a gift.

Re: New Members Welcome and Introduction
Wed, February 9, 2005 - 10:18 AMMy name's Harvey and I make theatre. On stages, in the street, everywhere. Participation is my gift. I like to participate in art and discussion going on around me. I like to create things that ask others to participate or otherwise generate discussion. My gifts are generally intangible and of a communicative nature.
I have a hard time accepting money for anything. I like to give away food, things I make, don't need anymore, etc. I think barter is nice, also, but gifting is my economy of choice. -

Re: New Members Welcome and Introduction
Tue, February 15, 2005 - 2:52 PMI've been collecting baby and kid stuff that I give to friends and others that I find that need it. I do ask that they return it when they are done with it so I can get it out to another that needs kid stuff.
I've volunteered my computer services (internet hookup, switches..) to a senior mobile home community (but no one has taken me up on it)
I want to organise some kind of group for moms and their kids so that moms get a day off every now and then, but I'm not sure where to start.
Oh my name is Kerri and I'm based in Scotts Valley for now. -

Re: New Members Welcome and Introduction
Thu, March 24, 2005 - 5:36 PMgreetings lovely people,
I'm emily
I'm a recent convert to the modern gift economy, although I've always been into trade and barter, besides being a manifester of abundance through intention.
my gift is primarily presence. I choose to work on my own and give it to those I meet on the street, the bus, the bart, anyone who shares my space. I make oragami cranes out of scraps of paper on the spot and give them away as a symbol of this presence. I've also been known to scribble tiny poems on their wings. most often, tho, I listen to people and look them in the eye. everyone needs validation.
of course I'm an avid freecycler and live simply. I'd love to start/contribute to projects with other gifters, especially projects such as ongoing freemarkets that combine elements of creativity. let's create and sustain the gift of true community

Fri, April 22, 2005 - 3:42 PMHey Emily,
Just wanted to let you know that I thought what you wrote was really, really beautiful - thank you! I'm Danny and the gifts I bring are attention, love, teaching, healing, learning & compassion.
I teach yoga & do reiki, so sometimes I give those things away too...
Be well, everyone, and let's all give freely (and let's not forget to "gift" to ourselves too).
Love & light!

Re: New Members Welcome and Introduction
Tue, May 31, 2005 - 11:13 PMWell, shit. I never did do really what I suggested visitors here do. Gifts I have to give: I am a good carpenter, a talented artists (word on the street has it), an enthusiastic trainhopper, web page designer, twenty year programmer, activist, yadda yadda, reader, writer, networker.
I'm into practical things, though have a pretty serious spiritual side that hasn't a thing to do with any religion. I'm impatient with bullshit and can usually smell it a mile off. I'm into a gift economy because, in terms of ways to self-organize and associate with others, it is a more pleasant, more meaningful, and more humane way as a community of taking advantage of each other's unique talents.
Take a few projects we've been involved with and do something with the idea. Steal it. Spread it. Change it. Make it your own.
